CHAMPIONS FOR 2004!
CASS BLUE 58 defeated XS AIR 45
Cass and XS Air. This final was meant to be. The teams placed 1 and 2 were in the final and the hype for this game was spectacular. CASS Blue were sporting new uniforms and for the first time in the competition, they had looked like a team (except for AK with his And 1 singlet). XS Air had far worst things to worry about than the way they looked. Injuries to Nick (knee) and Nuno (shoulder) are players hard to replace. With NBL Game Commissioner, Rick Burton in the crowd...the game was started with a bang!!
From the tip, CASS looked like the team determined to win with the first basket in 12 seconds. It was 4 mins before XS Air put any points on the board, a 3 pt from Sophea. The scores were locked at 10 all, then XS Air found their range, thru Craig with 4 pts in the half. CASS stayed close, but Sophea was able to hit a 3 pt the close out the half and the scores were 28 XS Air to 23 CASS Blue at the half. XS Air were on pace with 5 3pt in the half.
CASS started the 2nd half exactly the same with a layup to Andy within 10 seconds of the tip. CASS was mounting a run scoring 6 unanswered pts as XS Air found it hard to score a basket. Even a 4 on 1 fast break for XS Air was not able to be converted. Once they finally scored, CASS was up 33-30. CASS called time out and this steadied the ship again. Whatever XS Air was putting up, CASS had an answer and it was thru AK with his slashing to the basket, that proved the difference. AK continued to post up and finished the game with 16 pts. With 4 mins to go, XS Air was not able to find the hoop. Their last points, a layup by Leo and CASS replied with back to back 3's from John and Wayne to open the game up.
Free throws closed the game out. Even though CASS shot 47% from the line, they had 17 opportunities compared to 8 for XS Air. One thing CASS was able to do, was stop the XS Air running game. Luke finished with only 1 pt and Leo was held to 7. Sophea finished with a team high of 12 pts, but was scoreless in the 2nd half. For CASS, AK led the way with 16 pts, 13 coming from the second half. Wayne chipped in with 14 with 10 pts in the 2nd half.
Presentations proceeded after the game and the MVP for the competition went to CASS Blue's player AK (voted by the teams thru the regular season and finals series). The scoring title went to David Bedford, who finished with an average of over 17 pts per game this season.
CONGRATS TO ALL THE WINNERS AND LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU ALL AGAIN FOR THE 2005 SEASON STARTING IN MARCH 05.
